66% of respondents were dissatisfied with their current ability to speak and understand Te Reo Maori.   12% were satisfied.

 

Respondents were prepared to spend an average of 7 hours a week to improve.  46% were prepared to spend 1-5 hours and 22% 6-10 hours.  

 

45% of respondents nominated not having anyone to practice with as the primary barrier stopping them from leaning or improving their Te Reo Maori.  Three barriers were at 33%:

 

  1. Inability to afford the course fees.

  2. Lack of time.

  3. Unable to afford the time off work

 

30% of respondents said they did not have any support at home.

SURVEY RESULTS

Survey 2 - Te Reo Maori, Maori Employment, Housing, Politics and Whanau Enterprise.

 

The interium results of Survey 2 of 1,001 Tuhono Research Panel members conducted in August-September 2014. It is weighted to be representative of the Maori population at the 2013 census and has a maximum margin error of +3.1%.

 

It contains interim resutls on questions about the 2014 general election, Te Reo Maori, Maori employment and top-line results on whanau business activitiy and satisfaction with housing.

Maori Employment

74% of Tuhono Research Panel members in the workforce believe their work experience will be more valuable to them in helping them in a future career than their educational qualifications.  They also believe the fact they work hard (60%) is more likely to help them than their educational qualifications.  However, for 88% of 18-24 year olds, their educational qualifications are the most valuable. 

Whanau Business & Enterprise

Business planning, customer communication tools and IRD/tax and accounting advice were rated as the main resources/support that would have helped respondents who were in business, or were thinking of being in business, when they were setting up their business, or planning to do so.  The next most important were business mentoring and business websites/online selling.
